Utah's swimming and diving team completed its winter training on January 6 in Mesa, Ariz. It marked the end of the first half of the season for the Utes under new head coach Greg Winslow.
"At winter training we were really able to focus on the conference championships and coming together as a team," comments Winslow. "Over those eight days we trained about six hours a day. Our goal was to challenge the athletes physically and mentally to break barriers and develop new leaders."
At winter training the team worked on conditioning and technique in both Mesa and Tempe, Ariz. It wasn't all work in the pool though, as the team also enjoyed activities such as go-kart racing.
"While the kids performed well in the pool, they still have a long way to go to catch their coach on the go-kart circuit," jokes Winslow, after claiming he won those races.
The Utes completed the fall season with a record of 3-3 on the women's side and 2-1 in Mountain West Conference competition. The men are 0-1 and 1-3 in the MWC.
Now the focus turns to five-straight conference meets beginning on January 12, with TCU visiting. The Utes will conclude the regular season on February 1 in Provo, Utah, against BYU. After the meet with the Cougars the team will have time to prepare for the MWC Championships, held from February 27-March 1, in Oklahoma City.
"Our focus now turns to the conference championships," adds Winslow. "We need to figure out our race strategies for that meet. We also want to finish out strong in the dual meet season as well as we look toward the end of the regular season."
