THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah swimming and diving team returns to action on Saturday, January 12, 2008, when they host TCU. The meet will be held at the Ute Natatorium at 11:00 a.m. Utah has not competed since the UNLV Invitational in mid-December where they placed third in both men's and women's competition. The team is coming off its winter training in Mesa, Ariz.
The meet with the Horned Frogs marks the beginning of what will be five dual meets for the women and four for the men between Jan. 12-Feb. 1. All those meets will be against conference competition and concludes with BYU in Provo, Utah, on Feb. 1.
UTE NOTES:
The Utah women are 3-3 in dual meet competition this season and 2-1 in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes will turn their focus to coming together as a team for the stretch run of five straight conference meets. Over the winter training several underclassmen made strides to become leaders and their improvement could be key to a strong finish at the MWC Championships. Freshmen Stephanie Fredsall, Kristina Evans, Emily Judd, as well as sophomore Beth Gunderson all made big improvements over the week-long training period.
Heading into Saturday the Ute men have started 0-3 on the season and 0-1 in MWC competition. Against TCU they will look to use their depth to make the difference. Utah will need a big meet from the usual leaders, including Marco Ferraro, George Evans and Garret Beaman, but also hope to get a boost from the younger athletes such as Nathan Swallow, who performed well in winter training.
In the meet with TCU last season the Ute women rolled to a 178-121 win, while Utah's men lost 160-123 in Fort Worth, Texas.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
TCU- The Horned Frogs will be facing BYU on Thursday before coming to Salt Lake City to compete against the Utes. Through the mid-point of the season the TCU men have a record of 4-2 (1-2 in MWC competition), while the women are 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the MWC.
The TCU men have two of the top sprinters in the MWC and that will make them strong in both individual sprints and relays. Utah got a look at TCU at the UNLV Invitational in December but this will be the first dual meet match-up for these two teams since last season.
ON DECK WITH HEAD COACH Greg Winslow:
"For the women, we have the ability to win the rest of our meets if we can compete to our ability. This is the first step in figuring out what our squad will look like at the conference championships. The men have improved in their strength and conditioning and we will get a gauge on how well we did in our holiday training. We just need to focus on improving our technique as we hit the final month of the season."
