BOISE, Idaho- The University of Utah women's tennis team completed the first day of play at the Jack Taylor Invitational Friday in Boise.
The doubles team of Erin Monson and Anastasia Putilina lead the Utes with a win over New Mexico's Ola Abou-Zekry and Maria Sotirchos, 8-4.
The other three Utah doubles teams of Lexi Provancha and Andrea Maughan, Leigh Walsh and Lisa Johnson, and Julie Tukuafu and Karine Bourdages all fell to UNM doubles teams by 8-4 scores.
This weekend's tournament is being played in round robin fashion in lieu of the standard bracket format.
Despite a solid effort, the Utes were unable to come up with a singles win. Dee Dee Nelson lost her first set to Jessica Gardejford (UNM), 7-6. She came back in the second set to win, 6-4, but failed to overcome Gardejford in the final set, by a score of 6-1. Utah's Bourdages fell to Rocio Frej of Boise State in another hard fought three setter, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Frej also topped Johnson, 6-3, 7-5.
Maughan was unable to surpass BSU's Jana Mackova in a tightly contested match , 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Klaudia Wlodarczyk (BSU) got the best of Provancha, 6-3, 7-5. Walsh also came up just short against Bianca Jochimsen (BSU) falling, 7-5, 6-2. Putilina was defeated by BSU's Lauren Megale, 6-2, 6-4. Tukuafu found herslf on the losing end of the, 6-1, 6-2, decision to Laura Baum (BSU). Finally, Monson fell to Vivien Silfany of BSU, 6-1, 6-1.
The Utes will continue round robin play at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
