Scouting the WBCA Classic Opponents
Utah closes out the WBCA Classic against host Marquette.
Marquette, which is also receiving votes, has a 5-1 record after dropping their last game, 76-71 to Virginia in the WBCA Classic. Krystal Ellis, an AP honorable mention All-American last season, leads the Golden Eagles with 14.8 points per game. Three others are also averaging in double figures.
This is the first meeting between Marquette and Utah.
Last Time Out
Kalee Whipple paced Utah with 16 points as the Utes dropped their second game of the WBCA Classic, 60-55 to Gonzaga.
Whipple was one of four Utes in double figures. Morgan Warburton had 13 points, while Halie Sawyer and Katie King each tallied 10. Whipple, Warburton and Sawyer each had nine rebounds.
Neither team was able to pull away in the hard-fought, physical contest. The score was tied nine times and the lead changed 14 teams throughout the course of the game. Down three points with 17 seconds left, 58-55, Warburton's three-point attempt missed its mark and Tiffanie Shives hit two free throws in the final seconds to seal the win for Gonzaga.
Turnovers continued to plague the Utes, with 26 to the Zag's 16. The majority of Utah's turnovers were traveling calls.
Although Gonzaga held as much as a six-point lead in the first half, 15-8 with nine minutes left, Utah took a 20-17 lead at the five minute mark with a 12-2 run. Warburton and Whipple each scored five points during the surge for the Utes.
