TEMPE, Ariz.- Two players from the University of Utah women's tennis team advanced to the second round of consolation play at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational Friday in Tempe, Ariz. Both players were knocked out of main draw play in the first round.
"Against this kind of competition every match is tough," said head coach Mat Iandolo. " We didn't play great in the first round but had two good wins in consolation brackets. We are looking forward to have a more productive day tomorrow."
Anastasia Putilina pulled off a win in the first round of consolation play against ASU's Amanda Martin, 7-6(3), 6-4. Earlier in the day Putilina fell to Ali Walters of UCLA in the first round of main draw play, 6-1, 6-2.
Erin Monson duked it out with Lyndsay Kinstler of USC in a three set battle in the first round of consolation play. Monson fell in the first set 7-5, but came back and won the last two sets 6-2, 6-2. Monson fell earlier in the day during the first round of main draw play, 6-0, 6-3, to Micaela Hein of ASU.
In doubles play Monson and Putilina were unable to come up with a win against USD's Juliette Coupez and Samantha Mouly, falling 8-5. The doubles play is not being play in the traditional bracket formation, it following a round robin format instead.
Play will resume Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. starting with doubles. Singles main draw and consolation play with being at 9:30 a.m.
