SALT LAKE CITY - A solid second half powered the Utah women's basketball team to a victory over Santa Clara, 73-53.
Morgan Warburton led Utah (4-4) with 20 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Kalee Whipple had 17 points with a team-high four steals. Katie King was also in double figures with 12 points, including going 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Halie Sawyer led the Utes with 11 rebounds and also had seven points.
Up 33-26 at halftime, the Utes opened the second half with a 24-9 run over the first 10 minutes to take a 22-point lead, 57-35, and held that through the remainder of the contest.
Each team had its hot streaks in the first half. Santa Clara (1-9) led by six, 12-6, at the 13:53 mark before the Utes went on an 18-2 run, led by nine points from Warburton, to take a 10-point lead with just under seven minutes left. However, the Broncos would rally to score the next 10 points, which included three-point baskets from Rhianna Faithfull and Elizabeth Doran to tie the game at 24-24 with four minutes remaining.
Utah surged at the end of the first half with a 9-2 run, which included a layup at the buzzer from Sawyer, to take a 33-26 lead at halftime.
Freshman Janita Badon had the best game of her young Utah career, posting nine points with three assists and a steal. Hannah Stephens scored five points with two assists and two steals.
Santa Clara was led by Lena Gipson's double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Faithful posted a team-best 13 points.
Utah breaks this week for finals before returning to the court on Friday, Dec. 19, against Weber State in Ogden at 7:00 p.m.
