Scouting Mississippi State
Mississippi State is one of just a handful of unbeaten teams remaining in the country. The Bulldogs defeated Utah Valley, 71-63, on Friday afternoon.
Armeile Lumanu leads the team in both scoring (14.7 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 ppg). Two others are also averaging in double digit scoring - Chanel Mokango (12.3 ppg) and Alexis Rack (10.9 ppg). Rack has a team-best 52 assists.
The two teams have only met once, a 69-65 Utah victory in Montana in 2002.
Last Time Out
The Utah women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Weber State on Friday evening, 65-63.
The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth for the entire second half, with neither team holding more than a four-point lead. Weber State appeared to have the game locked up in the final minute, taking a 62-60 lead with a lay-up from Joey O'Neill with 1:14 remaining and stretching the lead to 63-60 with fifteen seconds remaining on a free-throw from Tonya Schnibbe.
Schnibbe missed her second free throw, and Halie Sawyer pulled down the rebound, getting the ball down the court to an open Morgan Warburton, who sunk a 3-point basket to tie the game, 63-63 with 10 seconds remaining.
Although Utah got the ball back on a Warburton steal, Schnibbe stole the ball with five seconds left before Katie King fouled Sarah Conner to stop the clock. Conner hit both her free throws with a second remaining, giving the Wildcats a 65-63 lead and sealing the Utes fate.
Warburton led Utah with 24 points, while King had a double-double with a career-high 18 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Kalee Whipple was also in double digit scoring with 10 points.
The Utes out-rebounded Weber State, 39-24, but turnovers continued to plague the Utes, committing 17 to the Wildcats eight. Weber converted those turnovers into 24 points. The Utes also has 15 fouls, compared to seven for Weber State.
The Utes held as much as an eight-point lead in the first half. Overall, the lead changed 20 times and the game was tied four times.
