Scouting Oregon
Oregon continues to rebuild after losing five seniors following the 2006-07 season. The Ducks have a 3-6 record this year and are in the midst of a four-game losing streak.
Micaela Cocks leads the Ducks with 16.2 points per game. Ellie Manou has a team-high 5.4 rebounds per game.
Utah is 3-9 all-time against Oregon. Oregon has won the last two meetings (2001 and 2006) and the Utes have never won in Eugene. Utah's last win in the series came in Salt Lake City in 2000.
Last Time Out
A valiant second-half effort cut a 21-point deficit to just four points before the Utah women's basketball team fell to Mississippi State, 63-51.
Although the game was back-and-forth early, a five-minute Utah scoring drought in the middle of the first half allowed Mississippi State to pull ahead to a 14-point lead, 25-11 with just under seven minutes remaining. The Bulldogs would have as much as a 21-point lead in the first half before holding a 37-18 advantage at halftime.
Utah chipped away at the deficit throughout the second half. Down 54-40 with seven minutes remaining, the Utes went on an 11-1 run to cut the lead to four with 2:30 left, 55-51. Morgan Warburton had seven points of that run, including three free-throws.
The Utes had costly mistakes down the stretch to shift the momentum Mississippi State's way, as the Bulldogs ended the game on an 8-0 run.
Utah outscored Mississippi State in the second half, 33-26. The Bulldogs had come into the game defeating teams by an average of 30 points.
Utah Schedule Ranked High in RPI
The Collegiate Basketball News Women's RPI College Basketball Ratings, released Dec. 21st, has ranked Utah's schedule 16th in the country. Several of the Ute's opponents this year are either ranked or are receiving votes in one or both polls.
The Mountain West Conference is ranked eighth in the RPI.
Warburton Candidate for Lowe's Senior CLASS Award
Morgan Warburton has been selected as one of 30 candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a senior and have notable achievements in these areas: classroom, character, community, and competition.
A national media committee will select 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in February 2009. Those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote.
Warburton Moves Up the Career Scoring Charts...
Morgan Warburton is the only current player in the MWC who is already at 1,000 career points. She has 1,472, moving into seventh all-time at Utah. Mikki Kane-Barton (1989-93) stands sixth with 1,690 points.
...and Whipple Nearing 1,000
Kalee Whipple has 988 career points, and needs just 12 points to become Utah's 21st player to reach the 1,000-point mark.
