Scouting USC
The Trojans are coming off a split at the Women of Troy Basketball Classic, taking No. 8 Duke to overtime on Dec. 19 before falling, 97-89, on the first day and then crushing Harvard the next day, 95-74.
A pair of freshmen in Briana Gillbreath and Ashley Corral are first and third on the team, respectively, in scoring. Gillbreath is averaging 12.5 points per game with 5.2 rebounds per game while Corral leads the team with 23 3-pointers. Senior guard Camille LeNoir is averaging 11.0 points per game.
Utah is 2-5 all-time against Utah, last recording a 62-45 loss against USC in a nonconference match at the Galen Center in L.A. last year.
Last Time Out
Kalee Whipple became Utah's 21st 1,000-point scorer as the Utes executed a late second-half rally to defeat Oregon, 63-49.
Whipple scored 14 of her 15 points in the first half. She has 1,003 points for her career. Morgan Warburton led Utah with 19 points - all of which were scored in the second half - while Katie King had her second double-double of the year, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Halie Sawyer led the Utes in rebounding with a career-high 14.
With the game tied, 47-47 with just over six minutes remaining, Utah closed out the game with a 16-2 run to take the lead and the victory. Warburton had 11 of those points (seven from the charity stripe) and also pulled down two rebounds in the Utes' surge.
Although Utah held as much as a 12-point lead in the first half, Oregon came back in the second half with an 18-7 run through the first eight minutes to tie the game, 37-37.
Utah Schedule Ranked High in RPI
The Collegiate Basketball News Women's RPI College Basketball Ratings, released Dec. 29th, has ranked Utah's schedule 25th in the country. Several of the Ute's opponents this year are either ranked or are receiving votes in one or both polls. The Mountain West Conference is ranked eighth in the RPI.
Utah vs. Ranked Opponents
Utah is 0-2 this season against ranked opponents. Utah fell to No. 7/8 Louisville on Nov. 25, 59-48 and lost to No. 16/15 Virginia, 65-57. In addition, South Dakota State entered the rankings several weeks into the season.
Quick Hits
Utah is ranked third in the country in free-throw percentage (.801) through games of Dec. 21 ... the Utes are also in the top 50 nationally (through 12/21) in field goal percentage (.447 - 26th) and rebound margin (6.0 - 46th) ... Morgan Warburton has scored in double figures in an MWC record 45 consecutive games ... The Warburton-Whipple Combo
Morgan Warburton and Kalee Whipple are arguably the best wing combo in the Mountain West Conference. The women are the only two in the confernce to have reached 1,000 career points.
The duo rank first and fourth, respectively, in the MWC in scoring. Warburton (19.6 ppg) is also tied for eighth in the conference in rebounding (6.9 rpg). Whipple (16.0 ppg) ranks third in the conference in steals (2.55 per game).
Both girls hit the 500 career rebound mark this season - Whipple against Westminster and Warburton vs. Santa Clara.
