Last Time Out
Kalee Whipple and Morgan Warburton combined for 58 points as the Utah women's basketball team defeated Southern California, 87-77.
Whipple scored a career-best 31 points before fouling out in the final minute, while Warburton also had a career-high with 27 points, including a team-best nine rebounds. Warburton was 16-of-16 from the charity stripe.
The hard-fought game saw 13 lead changes and nine ties. The momentum began to swing Utah's way late in the second half. With the score tied at 62-62 with eight minutes remaining, the Utes went on a 9-0 run to pull ahead, 71-63 with 5:32 left in the game. It was a lead that they would not relinquish.
Although USC would come within three points in the final stretch of the game, free-throw shooting enabled Utah to pull ahead late. The final key run came with under two minutes remaining. Up 75-72, Warburton, Whipple and Hannah Stephens each made a pair of free-throws from the line to take a nine-point lead they would not relinquish, as the two teams traded free-throws down the stretch.
Points from the charity stripe were a large factor for both teams, as Utah was 34-of-37 from the line and the Trojans were 28-of-34.
Utah Schedule Ranked High in RPI
The Collegiate Basketball News Women's RPI College Basketball Ratings, released Dec. 29th, has ranked Utah's schedule 25th in the country. Several of the Ute's opponents this year are either ranked or are receiving votes in one or both polls.
The Mountain West Conference is ranked eighth in the RPI.
The Warburton-Whipple Combo
Morgan Warburton and Kalee Whipple are arguably the best wing combo in the Mountain West Conference. The women are the only two in the conference to have reached 1,000 career points. Each hit career-highs in points against Southern California - Whipple with 31 points and Warburton with 27 points.
The duo rank first and second, respectively, in the MWC in scoring. Warburton (20.3 ppg) is also sixth in the conference in rebounding (7.1 rpg). Whipple (17.3 ppg) ranks third in the conference in steals (2.58 per game).
Both girls hit the 500 career rebound mark this season - Whipple against Westminster and Warburton vs. Santa Clara.
