SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team returned from a layoff of over a week to defeat local NAIA team Westminster, 69-49.
The Utes were led by Morgan Warburton's 23 points while Kalee Whipple had 21. Halie Sawyer had her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-best 11 rebounds. Her four steals and four blocked shots were also career-highs. Katie King was also in double figure scoring with 14 points.
The Griffins were held well below their season average of over 85 points per game.
Utah took a 12-0 lead before Westminster got on the board and held as much as a 23-point lead in the first half. The Utes held the Griffins to 19.2% (5-of-26) shooting from the floor in the half. Whipple led Utah with 12 points as the Utes were up 38-16 at halftime.
The second half was a different story, as Westminster outscored Utah in the half, 33-31. The Griffins held an 18-11 edge in rebounding with a 14-11 margin in turnovers.
Alexis Tucker led Westminster in scoring with 12 points.
Utah returns to the Huntsman Center court on Saturday, Dec. 13 against Santa Clara at 2 p.m.
