BOISE, IDAHO - The Boise State Broncos (42) defended their home courts on Saturday to slide by with a 4-3 win over the University of Utah women's tennis team (67). The Utes took the doubles point to get things started, but couldn't complete the stride in singles against the Broncos.
Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok stepped in at the top spot in doubles play to face No. 40 Polina Kokoulina and Pichittra Thongdach. The Ute duo was well prepared for the challenge as they fought for an 8-5 victory. At the No. 2 spot, Leigh Walsh and Evgenia Kryuchkova teamed up to take on Baum and Mackova. It was another battle for Utah, but they pulled through for the win at 8-4. At the No. 3 spot, Bianca Jochimsen and Klaudia Wlodarczyk swept the match 8-0 over Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan.
Heading into singles play with a 1-0 lead, the Utes were ready to battle. At the No. 3 spot, Boise State's Bianco Jochimsen (81) defeated Monson 6-2, 6-2. Kwok finished up next, competing against Jana Mackova. The Bronco overtook the Ute for a 6-3, 7-6 win to advance Boise State to 2-1. Walsh battled hard at the No. 5 slot against Wlodarczyk from the Broncos. Wlodarczyk slid by in the first set with a 7-5 win, but Walsh couldn't hold her in the second set. The Bronco took the match at 7-5, 6-4.
Kryuchkova stepped in at the No. 2 spot for a three-set battle against Boise State's Kokoulina. The Ute took the first set at 6-4, but Kokolina answered right back with a dominating 6-0 win in the second set. Kryuchkova dug deep for some power to slam through a winning third set. The Ute took the match 6-4, 0-6, 6-2. Ferris finished up next at the top spot against Thongdach. The Ute hit a 6-3 win in the first set, and attempted to continue the momentum in the second set, but Thongdach edged out a 7-6 win. In the tie breaker, the Bronco retired when Ferris was up 5-2. The Ute took the match 6-3, 6-7, 5-2 (ret.) to tie up the overall score to 3-3.
The match decision came at the No. 6 slot. Stacey Housley and Utah's Bourdages battled it out in a grueling three-set match. The Bronco took the first set at 6-3, but the Ute answered right back with a 6-3 win in the second. In the tie-breaker, Bourdages pushed herself, but couldn't hold the Bronco back. Housley took the win with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win.
