LOS ANGELES - Led by Laryssa Simpson's and Sarah Dowland's personal bests in the pole vault and javelin, several Utes earned top-10 finishes on the second day of the UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational.
Simpson finished sixth with a clearance of 11'1.75". Dowland placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 113'7".
Chasity Toilolo was also a top-10 finisher with a sixth-place mark in the shot put, throwing a toss of 41'7". She also had a top-20 finish in the discus, placing 19th with a toss of 120'6".
Ashley Patterson was sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.83. Janett Ern crossed the line 11th in the 1,500 meters in 4:40.31 while Sarah McFee placed 13th in the triple jump (34'7.5").
Aimee Nay was also strong in the pole vault, finishing 14th and clearing 10'8". Chelsey Kaplar (64.00) and Jessica Suddaby (64.35) placed 13th and 14th, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles. Kaplar also competed in the 100-meter hurdles, running a 15.16 for a 19th-place finish.
Haley McAllister led the Utes in the long jump with a jump of 17'5.25" to finish 19th. Sarah Dowland (36'2") and Josefin Berg (34'5") followed Toilolo in the shot put, placing 18th and 23rd, respectively.
Liza Whitehead ran a time of 12.61 to finish 25th in the 100-meter dash, while McAllister led the Utes in the 200-meter dash with a 33rd-place finish (25.98).
Events continue on Saturday, April 12, while members of the squad will also compete at Weber State.
