SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Utah baseball team spotted San Diego State a four-run lead, and the Utes couldn't overcome the deficit as they fell to the Aztecs here this afternoon, 6-2.
SDSU plated two runs in the bottom of the first, and it scored a pair of unearned runs in the third and fourth innings. Utah rallied with a pair of runs in the fifth, but SDSU pushed its lead back up to four runs in the bottom the eighth in holding on for the four-run victory.
With the win, the Aztecs sweep the three-game weekend series and Utah falls to 13-17 on the year and to 3-5 in Mountain West Conference play. SDSU is 21-15 overall and is in first place in the league, improving to 9-3.
Starter John James is dealt the loss, in only throwing 3.2 innings of work. He allowed six of SDSU's nine hits today. James also allowed four runs (two earned) and four walks. He struck out three Aztec batters.
The Aztecs also held the edge in hits as Utah had seven on the day. All of them came from seven different Utah bats. DC Legg was the only Ute with an RBI today, going 1-for-3 in the process.
Utah trimmed the Aztecs' lead to 4-2 after a two-run fifth inning. With runners on second and third, no outs, Legg singled to left field, allowing Michael Beltran to score from third. Legg's single left runners on the corners, and Legg advanced to second on Corey Shimada's sac bunt. Tyler Relf, who reached on a fielder's choice, then scored on a balk by Aztec pitcher Shane Kaufman.
However, SDSU scored all it needed in the first four innings. A two-run first allowed the home team to jump out to an early lead. An RBI single by Troy Hanzawa and an RBI grounder to the second baseman by Nick Romero plated the first two scores for SDSU.
SDSU hung another run on the board in the third on Jason Schaniel's RBI single. Another run in the fourth came off of a bases-loaded walk. The Aztecs responded to Utah's two-run fifth with two runs of their own in the eighth, preserving the four-run cushion.
Kaufman is the winning pitcher, having gone 7.2 innings and allowing six hits and one earned run. He fanned 11 Utah batters, walking just one. Hanzawa was the team's top hitter. He went 3-for-5 with three RBI this afternoon.
