OREM, Utah - The University of Utah baseball team's offense stalled here at Brent Brown Ballpark as the Utes dropped an 8-0 non-league game to Utah Valley here this evening.
Utah didn't get a hit until the fifth inning when Austin Jones broke up UV pitcher Marcus Moore's bid for a no-hitter. The Utes (10-13 overall), who belted out a then-season-high 21 hits at this same ballpark just one week ago, saw their three-game winning streak snapped tonight. They only tallied four hits in this game.
"Marcus pitched an outstanding game tonight," said Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg. "He was ready to go against us last week, but we were able to get to him and rough him up a little bit. But, tonight, he pitched really well."
All four Utah hits came off of four different bats.
The Utes tried to rally from a 3-0 deficit in the sixth inning. The top of the inning saw Utah belt out three of its four hits, and twice it loaded the bases. But, Moore arose to the occasion.
With the bases juiced and no outs, Jesse Shriner lined to the third baseman, who then stepped on third to turn the double-play. An infield single loaded the bases again. But, Jones swung and missed at a two-out, 3-2 pitch to end the inning.
"I was disappointed with the team after the sixth inning," said Kinneberg. "I think that inning took the air out of us, and we still had three at bats left in the game."
UV jumped all over Utah starter John James. The Wolverines tagged him for three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first. Jace Brinkerhoff plated Tyler Garretson when he grounded out to short. Garretson led the game off with a triple to the gap in right-center field.
James takes the loss this evening, falling to 1-3 on the year. He threw for six innings, allowing seven hits and four runs (three earned). James struck out five and walked three.
The Wolverine's two addition runs of the first inning came off of a pair or RBI doubles.
Another RBI double in the bottom of the sixth pushed UVU's lead up to 4-0, and the home team doubled its lead with a four-run eighth inning.
UV's Moore hurled the Wolverines to victory. He ups his mark to 3-4 on the season. It's Moore's second complete game of the season, his first shutout.
The same two teams will continue their four-game series tomorrow night, but this time it will be at Franklin Covey Field in Salt Lake City. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
