SALT LAKE CITY - Head swimming coach Greg Winslow has announced the signing of four athletes during the spring signing season.
Kristina Helmers (Pennington, N.J.), Simon Oberholzer (Switzerland), Foo Chuen Li (China) and Eric Murray (Atlanta, Ga.) will join the Utes for the 2008-09 campaign.
Helmers comes to Utah as a transfer from Flordia State University. As a freshman at FSU she competed in three events at the ACC Championships. Her sister, Melissa Hemlers, was a senior for the Utes last year.
"We are most excited about Kristina's versatility and experience," Winslow said. "She had an outgoing personality and will add a lot outside the pool."
Oberholzer holds the Swiss Championship record in the 200 fly. His best time in the 200 fly is 2:03.10. He also holds times of 55.84 in the 100 fly with a mark of 1:56.49 in the 200 free.
"Simon will fill holes in the fly and IM events," Winslow said. "He is a born leader who will add experience from his swimming background in international competition. Simon is a quality person who is a lot of fun to be around."
Foo Chun Li (also known as Nelson), the only diver of the group, comes to Utah from China.
"Nelson is going to give us our first dominant diver since Sterling Richards," Winslow said. "We think he can be a competitive force at the NCAA Championships. Nelson has a great sense of humor and a gentle spirit, who loves to dive and will fit in well with our team."
Murray will provide immediate help for Utah in the free and fly events. He has helped his Swim Atlanta club to US Open standards in the 200 IM and 400 IM at the 2008 ST All-American LC Championships, while swimming Juniors standards in the 200 free, 100 fly and 200 fly at the meet.
"Eric is a fantastic young man whose attitude and enthusiasm will bring a smile to practice every day," Winslow said. "He is exactly what we are looking for in our program and we're lucky to have him be part of the team. Eric comes from one of the best swim clubs in the country and he came highly recommended by his club coach."
The Utes open their 2008-09 campaign with an alumni meet on Sept. 27.
