2008-09 Utah Swimming and Diving Schedule
SALT LAKE CITY - The 2008-09 Utah swimming and diving schedule features several teams that finished the 2008 year in the top 30, with several competitive dual meets and a strong conference campaign.
"We have a very challenging schedule," head coach Greg Winslow said. "We are looking forward to the chance to move up in the conference."
The year begins with an alumni meet on Sept. 27, which follows a team and alumni banquet on Sept. 26. The Utes jump right into the schedule on Oct 2-3 with a tri-meet at Boise State which also includes Washington. The Washington women were 12th at NCAA's last season.
The schedule continues in California against UC-San Diego on Oct. 11 and UC-Santa Barbara on Oct. 18. Utah will spend the week between the two dates training in San Diego.
Utah has its first home dual meet of the year against Denver on Nov. 1 before going on the road to open the conference campaign at UNLV on Nov. 15. The Rebel men are the defending conference champions.
The Utes head east to start December with the Princeton Invite, Dec. 5-7, in Princeton, N.J. Teams that will be there include Florida, whose men and women finished last season in the top 10, and Princeton, which was in the top 30.
"The Princeton Invite is a chance to compete against teams that we normally don't see on that side of the country and show them what we can do," Winslow said. "The caliber of teams competing gives our swimmers a challenge."
Winter training breaks up the schedule, Dec. 27 through Jan. 9, with Utah traveling to Mexico for training.
Mountain West Conference action highlights the 2009 year, beginning at TCU on Jan. 9. Utah stays in the Lone Star State for a non-conference meet against North Texas and SMU on Jan. 10. SMU was in the top 15 at the NCAA Championships last year.
The Ute women compete at Colorado State (Jan. 15) and New Mexico (Jan. 17) before the entire team returns home to face Wyoming (Jan. 23) and Air Force (Jan. 24).
The team down south, BYU, travels to Salt Lake City on Feb. 6 to close out the dual meet season for the Utes. The Cougar women are the defending MWC Champions.
The MWC Championships, held in Oklahoma City, begin the postseason on Feb. 25-28.
The Utes have several top athletes returning and have brought in one of the top recruiting classes in the nation.
