SALT LAKE CITY - The incoming women's swimming class has been ranked 13th in the nation by CollegeSwimming.com. The class is head coach Greg Winslow's first signing class since taking over the head coaching reigns in June 2007.
"We are really excited about our class for the 2008-09 season," Winslow said. "We answered all of the questions we needed to address for the women and the newcomers will have an immediate impact on our team. This class has the potential to set new records at Utah and make a mark at the NCAA Championships as well.
The group is led by Whitney Lopus (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who is ranked ninth overall in her age group and is the fastest flyer in the class. She has Olympic trials times in the 100 and 200 fly, the 100, 200 and 400 free as well as the 200 IM. Hannah Caron (Raleigh, N.C.) also has Olympic trials times in the 100 fly and 200 IM. Kristina Helmers (Pennington, N.J.), a transfer from Florida State, high school All-American Sarah Cox (Scottsdale, Ariz.), as well as Lauren Hewson (Estes Park, Colo.), round out the signing class.
The recruiting classes were ranked based on an index mean to reflect a swimmer's impact on the collegiate level, as well as peer evaluations. Each swimmer was scored on the basis of their three best events with bonus points awarded to account for the swimmers' impact on relays.
The women's swimming team finished third at the 2008 Mountain West Conference Championships.
