NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - University of Utah hurdler Chelsea Shapard recorded the fourth-best time in the 400m hurdles at the NCAA West Regional meet this afternoon, and she will vie for an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship meet tomorrow afternoon.
The junior from Park City, Utah, won her heat at the NCAA West Regional in 59.61. Shapard will run in the regional final of the 400m hurdles tomorrow at around 5:40 p.m. (MDT).
"It was a solid race for Chelsea," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "It wasn't her prettiest race, but she did what she needed to do to advance. At this level, this time of year, that's what it's all about - survive and advance."
Shapard was one of two Utah athletes competing today. Josefin Berg got it started for the Utes with a 10th-place finish (180-11) in the hammer throw. Her top-10 finish may earn her an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship meet, and that will be determined after the NCAA East Region completes the hammer throw on Saturday morning.
"Josefin has a good chance to make it the NCAA Championship," noted Kepler. "After the automatic qualifiers, they rank the top-12 finishers by their best throw of the season. And, Josefin's best throw ranks in the top 25 in the nation."
In all, Utah sent five athletes to the regional meet. In addition to Shapard's race tomorrow: Chelsea DiGrazia and Alyssa Abbott will run in the 1,500m race and Shayla Houlihan will run in the steeplechase.
