MINNEAPOLIS - Incoming Ute swimmers Whitney Lopus and Eric Bonicelli competed in the Junior National Championships last week, held in Minneapolis, Minn., Aug. 4-8.
Lopus competed in the 100 and 200 fly, 100 and 200 free, 200 IM and several relay events. She helped lead the Brophy East Swim Team to wins in the 4x200 free relay and the 4x100 free relay. She swam the anchor leg of the 4x200, which finished with a time of 8:16.85, and swam the second leg of the 4x100 team that had a time of 3:48.60.
Individually, Lopus had her best finishes in the 100 and 200 fly events. She was fourth in the preliminaries in the 200 fly, finishing third in the finals in 2:13.60. In the 100 fly, Lopus finished second in both the prelims and finals, with a best time of 1:00.54.
Bonicelli swam in the 400 and 800 free races, as well as the 200 fly and 400 IM. His best finish came in the 200 fly, placing 11th in the preliminaries in 2:03.89, coming in 16th in the finals.
Lopus highlights an incoming women's class that is ranked 13th in the nation by CollegeSwimming.com.
The Utes open the 2008-09 campaign with an alumni meet, Sept. 26-27.
