Newcomer Lisa Johnson Captures Title At BYU Invitational

PROVO, Utah- Freshman Lisa Johnson of the Utah women's tennis team captured the flight B singles title at the BYU invitational Friday. Utah's doubles team of Erin Monson and Anastasia Putilina will compete for the Utes' second title of the weekend in the doubles finals Saturday.

"It was a pretty good day," said head coach Mat Iandolo "We learned a lot in non-successful matches as well as the successful ones. Overall the tournament was a good first step forward. We played a lot of matches and are looking forward to heading to the Boise State Invitational in two weeks."

En route to her singles championship, Johnson faced fellow Ute Julie Tukuafu in the semifinals. Johnson topped Tukuafu in a three-set match, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. In the championship match Johnson faced Colorado State's Tori Arneson, winning a hard-fought contest, 7-5, 7-6.

Monson and Putilina will play in the doubles finals Saturday against the No. 1-seeded team of Lauren Megale and Klaudia Wlodarczyk of Boise State. In the quarterfinals Monson and Putilina took out Kirsten Stople and Tori Arneson from CSU, 8-5. They then topped the No. 2-seeded team, BYU's Christina Doerr and McCall Jones, 9-8, (9).

In singles flight A, Putilina defeated Laura Neal of CSU, 7-5, 6-4, to reach the semifinal round of play. Her run was ended by Jones, 6-2, 6-1. Fellow Ute Leigh Walsh fell to Jones in the quarterfinal round, 6-1, 6-1. Maughan also lost in the quarterfinals, 7-6(5), 6-3, to Doerr.

Utah's doubles team of Tukuafu and Andrea Maughan were unable to top CSU's Laura Neal and Anette Pohjalainen, falling 9-7, in the quarterfinals.
