SALT LAKE CITY - Utah track & field coach Burke Bockman has recently been promoted to associate head coach, head coach Kyle Kepler announced. Entering his fourth season, Bockman will continue to coach the sprinters and hurdlers in addition to overseeing the jumpers.
"Burke has been an outstanding coach in his three years here at Utah," head coach Kyle Kepler said. "There is no doubt in my mind that he is one of the best young sprint, hurdle, and jumps coaches in the country. He has worked very hard to recruit and develop a record setting group of athletes. I know he will continue to develop those parts of our program at an even higher level."
In the 2008 season, Bockman coached the first ever Utah indoor sprint relay team to earn Mountain West Conference all-conference honors. During the outdoor track season, Chelsea Shapard, Ashley Patterson, Chelsey Kaplar, and Whitney Wellington competed in the 4 x 400 meter relay to place third overall and earned all-conference recognition with their school record breaking time of 3:43.93.
In his first three seasons on staff, the hurdles, sprinters and jumpers have broken eight indoor school records. In addition, his athletes have broken another five outdoor school records.
Burke coached two national qualifiers in 2007, guiding Amanda Feigt and Chelsea Shapard to the national meet in the 400 meter hurdles. The Utes also shined in the 100m hurdles as both Feigt and Jen Cutrer made it all the way to the conference finals. Feigt went on to win the conference heptathlon title in 2007, and also qualified for the NCAA Championships in that event.
In 2006, Bockman worked on improving a very young sprint group for Utah. The Utes saw great success in the 400m hurdles with both Jen Fresquese and Feigt qualifying for the 2006 West Regional meet. Feigt eventually went on to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the hurdles.
Now in his fourth season at the University of Utah, Bockman has coached five NCAA qualifiers, six regional qualifiers, three MWC champions, and 18 MWC all-conference competitors. His athletes have also set school records in 13 different events.
Prior to Utah, he spent two years as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
At UW-La Crosse, he helped the Eagles win back-to-back national indoor titles in 2004-05 and the outdoor championship in 2004. During his tenure, the Eagle sprinters and hurdlers flourished. He coached Derek Toshner - the Division III 400m hurdle national champion, the Division III Athlete of the Meet in 2004, and a 2004 Olympic trials qualifier. Bockman also had the privilege of assisting with the training of Andrew Rock as he became the school's first Olympian, winning the gold in Athens, Greece, as a member of the 4x400m relay team.
After working with Rock during the 2005 season, the Olympian went on to the silver medal at the World Outdoor Championships in the open 400m. He also went on to claim gold as a member of USA's 4x400m relay team.
In addition to working with Rock in 2005, Bockman saw all five of his UW-La Crosse hurdlers tally national-qualifying marks during the outdoor season. He ended up with four national qualifiers and two All-Americans.
Bockman was a three-time conference champion and a 10-time all-conference honoree at the University of Northern Iowa. He was an NCAA Division I qualifier in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay his senior year. Bockman also qualified at the USA Championships in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
He graduated from Northern Iowa with a degree in business management in 2003 and received his masters from Wisconsin-La Crosse in sports administration in 2005.
A native of Decorah, Iowa, Bockman resides in Salt Lake City.
