Adam Oliver is a senior this year from Colorado Springs, Colo. Oliver has had a stand-out year, breaking two school records that have stood for a decade: one in the 1000 free and the other in the 1650 free. Oliver's record-breaking performance also earned him the Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the Week December 10th.
Below is a 9 question interview with Oliver:
What are you majoring in? I'm studying finance.
What drew you to Utah? I grew up in Colorado, so there are a lot of similarities between Salt Lake City and home. I really like Salt Lake City. It's close enough to home, but far away enough to be independent. I also really liked the coaching staff and I felt like I really connected with the team.
What do you do in the offseason for fun? Swim. Just kidding. Well, kind of. I like outdoor stuff too. I've climbed Mount Olympus and like to climb around in the foothills behind campus. I've made a couple trips down to Moab and really enjoyed that.
What is your favorite movie? It's probably Fight Club. I haven't read the book yet, but I have read almost all the other books by the author [Chuck Palahniuk] like Choke and Survivor.
What kind of music do you like to listen to? I'll listen to pretty much everything. I'll listen to country, rock, or whatever. A lot of the guys on the team are really into rap and hip hop, and we listen to that a lot during weight lifting sessions. I've grown fond of that. I don't know any of the rappers, I just listen to it.
What is your favorite event as a swimmer? I guess my favorite would have to be the mile [1650 free]. I think a lot of that stems from me being good at it this year. I don't know, maybe I don't get as bored as easily as some other people. I've been pretty successful and find that I really enjoy really long practices and really long races.
Have there been any athletes that have really inspired you? I would say Lance Armstrong has been pretty inspirational for me. His determination and the preparation he puts in for his sport is really inspiring. He trained really hard and knew that he worked harder than anyone else he was competing against and that's how he became successful.
What has been your favorite moment as a swimmer here at Utah? I have two. The first was when we hosted BYU two years ago. The energy and the atmosphere there was awesome. The second was the Princeton Invite we went to last month. With the amount of school records we broke and how well everyone swam was really awesome.
What are your plans for the future? I graduate in May and I'm hoping to get a job in the finance sector, particularly in banking. I might stay in Utah for a little while, but I'm willing to go anywhere in the world. Anywhere the best opportunity for me is.
