The University of Utah volleyball team will end its regular-season schedule with a match at Long Beach State on Saturday at Walter Pyramid as part of the Mizuno Thanksgiving Classic. The Utes take on the 49ers Saturday at 7:30 p.m. PT.
Utah has won two of its last three matches and stands 17-11 overall and finished in a third-place tie with New Mexico. Both schools ended with identical 10-6 records in the Mountain West Conference this season.
Last Time Out: Three Utes hit double-figures in kills and Utah clinched a third-place tie in the MWC with a 3-0 sweep at Air Force (25-18, 25-16, 27-25) Saturday at Clune Arena. The Utes managed to outhit the Falcons, .276 to .131, and also held a 7-4 edge in team blocks.
Scouting the 49ers: Long Beach State's Brian Gimmillaro is in his 25th season as head coach of the 49ers. Gimmilaro has compiled a 675-161 record and led LBSU to 23 straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
Utah head coach Beth Launiere owns a 408-223 career mark. The two coaches in Saturday's match have combined for 1083 wins as opposed to just 384 losses for a .738 winning percentage.
Sizzling Sandberg: Chelsey Sandberg (West Jordan, Utah) led Utah in kills (3.29 k/s) and tied for the team lead in blocks (1.29 b/s) in a pair of matches this weekend at San Diego State and Air Force. Sandberg converted 23 kills on 44 swings with just five attack errors for a .409 hitting percentage in the seven sets of play in the two matches. For the season, Sandberg is tied for third in the MWC with 0.30 service aces per set and ranks seventh with a .303 hitting percentage.
Sandberg in Utah Record Books: Sandberg is eighth in school history with 322 block assists and is 30 away from Whitney Webb (2004-07), who is seventh place in Utah history with 352 in her career. Sandberg is also ninth in the Utah record book with 342 total blocks.
Killpack Gets Kills (and Blocks): Danielle Killpack (Idaho Falls, Idaho) leads the MWC with 1.24 blocks per set and her 1.39 blocks per set in conference-only matches leads the league as well.
On the attack Saturday at Air Force, Killpack registered a new career high with 11 kills on just 16 swings and two errors for a .562 hitting mark. Killpack also registered three blocks in the match.
