Utah vs. Louisville - Game Notes ![]()
SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team goes back on the road this weekend to take on last year's NCAA runner-up and 25th-ranked Louisville in Kentucky on Sunday, Dec. 6. The Utes are playing their fifth game away from Salt Lake City and their second ranked team of the season.
Utah goes into the game with a three-game winning streak after using an overtime surge to beat Idaho State on Wednesday, Dec. 2. With the score tied after regulation, 47-47, the Utes outscored the Bengals in the extra period, 19-3. Halie Sawyer had her fifth career double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Kalee Whipple scored 18 to lead Utah while Taryn Wicijowski had 14 points, six of which came in overtime.
Louisville, which is coming off a runner-up performance at the 2009 NCAA Tournament, is currently 4-2 on the year. The team is ranked 25th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and is receiving votes in the Associated Press poll. The Cardinals lost their two top players from last year's team and the current team has eight underclassmen. Sophomore Becky Burke is Louisville's leading scorer with 14.3 points per game. Monique Reid leads the Cardinals in rebounding with 7.5 per game along with 14.0 points. Ashley Rainey is also a strong rebounder with 7.0 per game.
Louisville has won both meetings against Utah, including a 59-48 victory last year in Salt Lake City. The two teams also met in the 1998 NCAA Tournament in Durham, N.C., a 69-61 Cardinals win.
