CORAL GABLES, Fla.- Freshman Anastasia Putilina of the 47th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (1-3) defeated 42nd-ranked singles player Jennifer Stevens, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, at the No. 1 position. Even with the win the Utes still suffered a 5-2 loss to 28th-ranked Virginia (3-1) in the consolation match during the opening weekend of the ITA National Indoor Qualifiers Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
"I am very proud of Anastasia," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "She has done everything we have asked her to do.
"Overall we battled Virginia pretty well," continued Iandolo. "They are a top 30 team and someone who just beat TCU. We are looking forward to the match against Weber State this upcoming Saturday and Boise State the following Thursday, they are going to big matches at home."
Utah's second point was captured by Junior Erin Monson beating Lindsey Hardenbergh at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 1-6, 10-5. Both of the Utes points were earned after the Cavaliers had already clinched the match by winning the doubles point and the first three singles points.
Utah returns home to take on Weber State Saturday February 7 at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
