PROVO, Utah - The Ute baseball team closed out a three game series with BYU on Saturday, March 14, falling 11-3.
Defensive errors were the story of the day for both teams. All three of Utah's runs were unearned with BYU making three errors, while five Ute errors led to seven unearned runs.
Utah (7-8, 1-2 MWC) got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Leadoff man Cooper Blanc was hit by a pitch. JoJo Sharrar reached on a fielders choice as the BYU pitcher attempted to get Blanc out at second, but a throwing error sent the Ute center fielder to third. Blanc would score on Kevin Hussey's ground out.
BYU (10-7, 2-1 MWC) put four on the board in the bottom of the third, which included Steve Parker's two-run home run to left field.
The Cougars added runs in the fifth and six innings, both of which were unearned, to pull ahead to a 6-1 lead.
Utah rebounded in the seventh inning, cutting the lead to 6-3 on two runs. Tyler Yagi, who started at third base, and Blanc, led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Both advanced on Sharrar's ground out and the pair scored on an error by the BYU second baseman.
Five unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh from BYU put the score at 11-3. Andrew Law hit a bases loaded double to score three runs in the inning for the Cougars.
Blanc had a hit and two runs to lead Utah at the plate. On the mound, Jordan Whatcott pitched five innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out five in the loss. He falls to 2-1 on the year. The Utes used five pitchers overall. The relievers were highlighted by a 1.2 inning, three strikeout effort from Tyler Anderson.
"We didn't do anything very well today," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We just didn't play defense at all. We will get ready for Southern Utah then get to work on TCU."
All three games were worth 1.5 points of the Deseret First Duel rivalry series. Utah earned 1.5 points over the three games, while BYU won two games for three points. The two teams will play three more games this year.
The Utes return to the diamond against Southern Utah on Tuesday, March 17, at 3 p.m.
