Utah Women's Tennis Succumbs to Ole Miss

SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The 53-ranked Utah women's tennis team (6-5) fell to 44th-ranked Ole Miss (8-5) in the finals, 4-0, on the final day of play at the Barnes Collegiate Women's Invitational, Friday.

"We just came out a little flat in singles," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We just got beaten by a good team. The loss does not, however, take away anything from making to the finals or the experience."

In doubles play juniors Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan at the No. 1 spot fell to the 61st-ranked team of Karen Nijssen and Krisiti Boxx, 8-2. Senior Leigh Walsh and Karine Bourdages were topped at the No. 3 position by Gabriela Rangel and Abby Guthrie, 8-6, putting Ole Miss up 1-0.

Freshmen Anastasia Putilina and Lisa Johnson at the No. 2 spot defeated Laura van de Stroet and Mimi Renaudin, 8-6.

In singles play, Putilina fell to 36th-ranked Boxx at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 6-0, giving the Rebels a 2-0 lead over the Utes.

Johnson was topped by van de Stroet at the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-2, and Monson at the No. 2 position fell to 70th-ranked Nijssen ,6-3, 6-2. With Ole Miss up 4-0 the rest of the matches were not finished.

Utah will head to Las Vegas for a match against Ohio State Monday March 23 at 11:00 a.m. PT.
