LAYTON, Utah - The University of Utah men's golf team captured first place at the Utah/Weber State Purple and Red Invitational. The Utes clinched the team title by one shot on the first playoff hole against the University of Arkansas Little Rock.
Utah started the tournament with identical first and second round scores of 291 adding a third round mark of 285 for a total 867, three-over-par.
"We played very well today," said head coach Randall McCracken. "The guys deserved this win. We were fortunate to have an earlier tee time today and were able to avoid most of the wind. The guys played great and when conditions got tough they continued to play well. We were able to come back after being 20 shots down and that is hard to do."
Freshman Camden Nicholson competed in his first tournament as a Ute leading the team with a mark of 215 (75, 69, 71), one-under-par, tying for fifth place.
Two strokes behind Nicholson, junior Chase Hite added a third round of 74 for a three round total of 217, one-over-par, tying for 14th-place.
Tying for 19th-place, Kaleb Mahanes and Derek Adams shot marks of 219, three-over-par. Mahanes added a third round of 72 to a first and second round combined score of 147. Adams ended the day with a low mark of 69 to his first two rounds of 74, 76.
Junior Mike Branca completed the invite with a three round total of 222 (73, 78, 74), nine-over-par, tying for 28th-place.
Jeff Kitches and Joe Webber competed in the invite as individuals. Kitches tied for 26th-place shooting a final combined score 221. Webber completed the final day with a three round total of 225, nine-over-par.
Levi Garcia of CSUB took the individual title with a score of 207 (71, 72, 64), nine-under-par.
Up next the Utes will head to Palm Springs, Calif. for the Wyoming Desert Classic Oct. 5-6.
