SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah volleyball team has announced the signing of five student-athletes who will join the team for the 2011 season, head coach Beth Launiere announced.
Bailey Bateman, Shelby Dalton, Becca Fuchs, Chelsey Schofield and Alli Spurrier will join the Utes in 2011.
"We're excited about this class for a lot of reasons," Launiere said. "They will make our program stronger. There is a lot of physicality, athleticism and volleyball skill in the makeup of this class."
Below is a look at the incoming recruiting class:
Bailey Bateman (MB / 6-0 / West Hooper, Utah / Fremont HS)
Launiere on Bateman: "Bailey is a great competitor and an aggressive athlete, who just loves to play volleyball. She is going to excel as an NCAA Division I level athlete in this environment because of those qualities. She possesses a lot of athleticism and is very physical for a high school athlete. She should adjust to the DI level well because of her strength."
Nominated for both the Gatorade Player of the Year and Under Armour High School Player of the Year awards during her junior year ... named to PrepVolleyball.com's Top 100, one of two from the state of Utah ... top Utah player in 2010 ... all-area selection in 2009 ... earned team's MVP and Best Front Row Player ... won a gold medal at Utah Summer Games ... three-year letterwinner for coach Alicia Mitchell ... plays for Club V 18 Black for coach Reed Carlson ... team won the Extreme 18's title at the 2008 Far Western Championship and was the 2007 Gold Medal champions ... also won the High Performance Team Arizona title ... won the Triple Crown Stand-Out Athlete award ... is in the top 10 percent of her graduating class at Fremont High School.

Launiere on Dalton: "Shelby is a tremendous all-around athlete. She is the type of player who could pick up any sport and excel at it, which is proven by her success in high school sports. With her focusing just on volleyball, her potential will be unlimited as she gains experience. It's unique to sign players without club experience. This is a good example that it is possible to play Division I volleyball without playing club."
All-state selection as a junior and sophomore (2010 team has not been announced yet) ... named the Region 15 MVP during her junior season ... was the subject of a feature article in the ( AVCA's Phenom Magazine) ... lettered all four years, playing for coach Debra Hren ... was a pitcher and shortstop for 2010 state champion softball team ... also was a center on the basketball team ... member of National Honor Society ... sister Wendy attended the University of Utah ... brother Tony played basketball at College of Eastern Utah and currently plays at Carrol College in Montana.

Becca Fuchs (OH / 5-11 / Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Menomonee Falls HS)
Launiere on Fuchs: "Becca is good all-around volleyball player, who has a lot of skill and experience on the court. She is a tremendous athlete with excellent jumping ability. She competes in the high jump for the track & field team, which shows her level of athleticism. She has played a lot of volleyball in her life and has a high skill level. She's just a good all-around player with a great attitude. She is very positive, coachable and has great desire."
Led team to semifinals of WIAA state tournament in 2010 ... third-team all-state selection in 2010 ... second-team all-conference selection in 2008 and 2009 ... 2008 MVP of the Watertown Tournament ... four-year letterwinner for coach JC Bruns ... plays club for Milwaukee Sting 17 Gold and was selected to the Prep Volleyball Showcase All-Tournament Team in 2010 ... also a member of the Menomonee Falls High School Track & Field team ... competed in the 200m, 300m hurdles, triple jump, and high jump ... ran on a conference title-winning relay in 2010 ... qualified for sectionals in the triple jump last season ... member of Student Council, Key Club, National Art Honor Society, National Honor Society, Math Club and is the student representative on the school board ... honor roll student since freshman year ... won the President's Award in 2009.

Chelsey Schofield (OH / 6-1 / Provo, Utah / Mountain View HS)
Launiere on Schofield: "Chelsey has a combination of size, athleticism, length and a lot of volleyball experience. This combination is what makes her so good. Her skill level is high. She has been playing the game for a long time and will be prepared to play at the NCAA Division I level. Chelsey is a very determined athlete with high goals that I believe she can reach at the University of Utah."
Named to PrepVolleyball.com's Top 100 team, one of two from the state of Utah ... was an AVCA/MaxPreps Player of the Week ... MVP of Region 7 in 2009 ... first-team all-state and all-region selection in 2009 (2010 team has not been released yet) ... two-time team captain ... four-year letterwinner ... team was fifth in 2009 and eighth in 2010 at state tournament ... state record-holder for most kills in a match ... averaged 5.33 kills and 3.90 digs per set with a .343 hitting percentage during senior season ... team won the 2009 Region 7 championship ... member of fifth-place team at nationals during freshman year and 18th-place team in Open Division at nationals in 2010 ... great-great uncle is Vern Gardner, who was a second-team All-American basketball player at Utah in 1947 and 1949, and helped the Utes win the NIT championship in 1947 ... class president ... president of Bruin Crew (service organization) ... member of National Honor Society ... Honor Roll student since 2007.

Alli Spurrier (RS / 6-3 / Salt Lake City, Utah / Olympus HS)
Launiere on Spurrier: "Alli has tremendous blocking instincts. She's long and big at the net. She's a left-handed attacker and will bring a significant blocking presence to our team. Alli plays right side and has the ability to affect our opponents' top outside hitters. She can have a big impact for us in this area."
Selected to 2010 4A State Tournament team ... served as team captain ... three-time team MVP ... all-state team in 2009 ... averaged 18 kills, five blocks and two service aces during career at Olympus High School for coach Sam Vaitai ... pounded 487 kills during her senior season ... hit for a .890 hitting percentage at the 2009 Kansas City Qualifier ... named MVP of High Country club team, which was the No. 1 team in the western region ... Spanish Club President at Olympus High School ... member of the school's Be Strong Association ... honor roll student.
