Utes Down Hartford, 51-45, at Caribbean Challenge

CANCUN, Mexico - A strong second half lifted the Utah women's basketball team to a 51-45 victory over Hartford at the Caribbean Challenge on Friday afternoon.
Iwalani Rodrigues scored a career-high 15 points for the Utes while Janita Badon just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
After leading 24-22 at halftime, Hartford was held to just four points through the first 11 minutes of the second half, allowing Utah to take a nine-point lead, 37-28. The Hawks didn't go away quietly, as they found their momentum and reeled off a 9-1 run that cut the Ute lead to 40-39 with three minutes remaining.
Strong rebounding and solid free-throw shooting lifted the Utes in the final minutes. Michelle Harrison scored six of her eight points in the last three minutes while Rachel Messer completed a key three-point play from the free-throw line after being fouled behind the arc. Brittany Knighton had a defensive rebound and a steal in the final minute.
Rodrigues led the Utes in a tight first half, scoring 10 of Utah's 22 points. Hartford took a six-point lead with 8:51 left on an Ilicia Mathis jumper but Utah rallied back with a 9-3 run to tie the game at 18-18 with just under seven minutes left. Rodrigues scored five points of the run and Knighton hit a pair of free-throw shots for the tie.
Hartford was led by Jackie Smith's 17 points.
Utah closes out the Caribbean Challenge on Saturday, Nov. 27, against Green Bay.
