AMES, Iowa - The distance medley team comprised of freshmen Megan Combe, Lauryn McKay, Nikki Dotter and Amanda Mergaert competed at the Iowa State Classic on Friday for a tenth place overall finish and combined time of 12:03.23.
The Utes kicked off competition on Friday with a good showing in the distance medley. Their time of 12:03.23 ranks third on Utah's all-time performance list. Combe ran the first leg (3:48), followed by McKay (58.1) and Dotter (2:20.5). Mergaert had the final leg of the race (4:57.3).
"I was pleased with the overall effort. That was Megan's first ever race at 1200 meters so the learning curve was very steep. Lauryn did a nice job to gain a few spots during the 400 meter leg. Nikki keeps improving week by week. Amanda's split was ten seconds faster than a week ago which is not normal. She is really starting to figure things out and run with confidence," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "I was most impressed by this groups approach. They asked excellent questions and prepared like a veteran team rather than the young, inexperienced group that they are. That really bodes well for the future. They all competed very hard. Hopefully, we can recover and get prepared to run even better in tomorrow's individual events."
