Utah Women's Tennis Upsets No. 50 Arizona

SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's tennis team (4-5,0-0) upset 50th-ranked Arizona (8-2,0-0) by a score of 5-2, Saturday at the Eccles Tennis Center. Sophomore Lisa Johnson clinched the match for the Utes from the No. 6 singles position by topping Natalia Toporowska in a three set match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

"This was a great win for out team," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "I can't say enough about the effort put in by our players to beat a top 50-ranked, Pac-10 team. We are ready for our big match against No. 22 DePaul tomorrow."

In doubles play, sophomore Anastasia Putilina and freshman Paige Miles upset the 42nd-ranked team of Natasha Marks and Alexandrina Naydenova at the No. 1 spot, 8-3.

Seniors Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan fell at the No. 2 position in a hard fought,9-7, match to Sarah Landsman and Claire Rietsch.

Johnson and junior Evgenia Kryuchkova secured the doubles point for Utah when they defeated Ariane Masschelein and Jane Huh, 9-8(3), at the No. 3 position.

In singles play, Monson topped Naydenova, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot making the score, 2-0, in favor of Utah.

Miles then downed Masschelein at the No. 4 position, 6-2, 6-1, putting the Utes up, 3-0, over the Wildcats..

Putilina fell at the No. 1 spot to 88th-ranked Marks, 6-4, 6-2, giving Arizona it's first point.

Kryuchkova was topped by Landsman at the No. 2 spot,6-4, 6-3, making the 3-2.

Johnson then clinched the match for Utah at 4-2.

Harris defeated Toporowska at the No. 5 position, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, putting the final score at 5-2.

The Utes will host a double header tomorrow facing No. 22 DePaul first at noon, followed by Weber State at 5 p.m. The matches will be held at the Eccles Tennis Center. Admission is free.
