STANFORD, Calif. - Distance runners from the University of Utah women's track and field team competed on Friday and Saturday at the Stanford Invitational. Utes competed in the 800m run, 1500m run and 3000m steeplechase.
Junior Alyssa Abbott competed in heat three of seven in the 1500m run, finishing first in the race with a time of 4:27.62, missing her personal best time by two seconds. Freshman Amanda Mergaert competed in the fifth heat of the race, finishing third with a new personal best time of 4:30.19.
"Alyssa would have run much faster, but her race was plagued by a slow opening lap," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "Her last two and three-quarter laps were very impressive and give her a great deal of confidence that she can run much faster in the near future.
"Amanda ran a solid race and went from seventh to third in the last 200 meters. She had another great finishing kick. This was her first ever race at this distance. She knows she gave the leaders too much distance during the third lap. Even when young athletes like her make those types of mistakes, it's fun to see them understand what they did wrong and use it to there advantage in future races. She still has a lot to learn and enjoys the process."
In the 800m run on Saturday, sophomore Lucy Yates competed in the fifth heat for fifth place (13th overall) with a time of 2:08.72. Yates missed tying her personal best mark by .01 seconds.
Volunteer assistant coach Shayla Houlihan competed in the steeplechase on Friday night as well. She finished first in her heat and first overall with a new lifetime personal best of 10:03.26. This time also gives her the "A" standard for the U.S. Outdoor Championships to be held in mid June. Her previous best was set one year ago at the same meet when she ran 10:29.
