SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's track and field team had two more athletes earn NCAA provisional qualifying marks in last chance qualifying meets. Sophomore Lucy Yates competed in the 800m run at the Alex Wilson Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind., and sophomore Langley Iverson competed in the high jump at the UW Final Qualifier in Seattle, Wash.
Yates set a lifetime personal best of 2:07.55, an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 800m run, to earn third place overall in the race. She broke her previous personal best last week at the Mountain West Conference Championships where she finished in 2:07.60, which is ranked 33rd in the nation this past week. Yates' finish time of 2:07.55 on Saturday at Notre Dame ranks second all-time in Utah school history.
Iverson competed at the UW Final Qualifier on Saturday afternoon in the high jump where she set a new lifetime best and provisional qualifying clearance of 5-10 (1.78m) in route to a third place overall finish. Her mark in the event ranks fourth all-time in school history. Her previous best was set earlier this season (5-9.75), which was ranked 42nd in the country this past week.
"Lucy had a great race today and was exactly where we wanted her to be at the 600-meter mark," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "It was a tough race, but she learned a lot from it. It was difficult to turn around and run today after such an incredible performance in the 800-meter leg yesterday in the distance medley. Up in Seattle, Langley did very well. On her last jump (1.83m) she had about cleared the bar but nudged it enough for it to fall. She continues to get better and I think she is on the verge of a breakthrough."
The selection for the 2010 NCAA Indoor National Championships will be made early next week. The meet will take place on March 10-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
"We are hoping to catch a break and get into the national meet with our distance medley group," said Kepler. "Anything can happen. We are so close in breaking through a barrier and getting our kids to the national meet. We have had a lot of lifetime bests in the biggest meets of the year, and as a coach, that is all want for our kids. I feel that coming to these meets was worth the effort and hopefully we'll get to compete at the highest level. They executed everything very well and are putting our program on the map. We are looking at a bunch of first and second year athletes really getting things done here, so that is promising for our outdoor season as well as next year. We will find out Monday evening if we get to move on to the national meet; if not, we will take some much needed rest and get ready for the outdoor season."
