SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Utah men's swimming and diving team finished its 2009-10 campaign with a 3-5 overall record and a 1-4 record in Mountain West Conference competition. The Utes finished sixth at the MWC Championships with 401 points.
The Utes opened their regular season against Denver, falling short to the Pioneers 163-137, but quickly recovered by beating Arizona State a week later. The Utah men finished first in 12 of 16 events against the Sun Devils and were led by senior John Baque (Olympia, Wash.). Baque finished first in the 100 and 200 breast, 200 IM and helped the 400 medley relay team to a first-place finish.
In November, the men headed to Long Beach, Calif., to compete in the Toshiba Classic against some of the top teams in the west, including Stanford, Hawaii and California. The Utes finished fifth, out of 14 teams, with 428.5 points and had qualifiers for the finals in each event on the last day of competition.
During the second half of the season, the Utes opened conference competition against MWC rival, TCU, at Ute Natatorium falling short 151-147. Against the Horned Frogs, the men took first place in six of 16 events and were led by senior David Pursley (Edmonton, Canada) and freshmen Karson Applin (Houston, Texas) and Bjorn Gunnarsson (Norrkoping, Sweden).
The Utes ended their regular season on a high note, beating in-state and MWC rival BYU to end its five-year losing streak against the Cougars, 162-138. Stand-out performances came from Baque, sophomore Major Robinson (Missoula, Mont.) and junior Garrett Peterson (Las Vegas, Nev.).
At the 2009 MWC Swimming and Diving Championships, held in Oklahoma City, Okla., the Utes displayed strong consistent performances from Robinson, Pursley, and Baque.
Freshman Brandon Stoppelmoor (Olathe, Kan.) and Chuen Li Foo (Hong Kong, China) represented the Utah men at the NCAA Diving Regional in Austin, Texas. Foo gathered 575.45 points in the 3-meter dive to earn 14th place overall, while Stoppelmoor finished in 18th-place with 203.90 points on the platforms.
After the conclusion of the championships, the Utes had eight athletes named to the All-MWC team. Honors went to Applin, Gunnarsson, Bryan Michaels (Shoreline, Wash.), Baque, Peterson, Pursley, Robinson and Eric Bonicelli (Overland Park, Kan.).
