SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Utah women's swimming and diving team finished its 2009-10 campaign with a 7-7 overall record and a 4-4 record in Mountain West Conference competition. The Utes finished fifth at the MWC Championships with 377 points.
The Utes opened the season with a dual meet against Denver and North Texas ending the day with a 1-1 overall record. The win over the Mean Green kicked off the beginning of a successful non-conference season for the Utah women, defeating Boise State, New Mexico and MWC rival, UNLV.
Against the Rebels, the Utes fought hard to the very last event and defeated their foes by one point. The Utes were led by sophomore Hannah Caron (Raleigh, N.C.), who finished first in the 100 and 200 fly, the 200 IM and helped secure a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay.
The Utah women's diving squad succeeded in sweeping the top two spots in both of its events. Junior Kwan Ling Yu (Yuen Long, Hong Kong) finished first in the 3-meter dive with a score of 268.50 and second in the 1-meter dive at 260.70. Freshman Ellis Walters (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 285.23 and second in the 3-meter dive with 268.50.
In November, the Utes participated in the Toshiba Classic in Long Beach, Calif., facing 26 teams, including No. 4 Stanford and No. 6 California. The women were led by juniors Natalie Edge (South Jordan, Utah) and Kristina Evans (Salt Lake City, Utah), who had outstanding performances throughout the weekend. Edge finished 16th overall in the 50 free with a time of 23.68, while Evans touched with a time of 24.10 to finish in 28th place. The Utes ended competition in ninth place with 271 points.
In the midst of conference competition, the Utah women traveled to Fayetteville, Ark., to take on the No. 19 Arkansas for the first time in school history. The women fell short to the Razorbacks 195-100, but benefited from strong performances by Edge, Walters, Yu and junior Maiya Otuska (Littleton, Colo.).
Edge took first in the 100 free and third in the 50 free. Otsuka placed first in the 400 IM with a time of 4:28.74 and second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 breast. Yu finished second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 283.43, while Walters rounded out the top three with a final score of 281.63 in the 3-meter dive.
At the 2009 MWC Swimming and Diving Championships, held in Oklahoma City, Okla., the Utes had strong performances from Caron and senior Beth Gunderson (Portland, Ore.). Caron secured a second-place title in the 200 fly and a first-place position in the 100 fly. Gunderson set a new personal best in the 100 back, giving her an overall finish in 12th place. Gunderson also teamed up with Otsuka, Caron and Edge in the 400 medley relay that left the Utah women in fourth place.
Yu and Walters continued their diving season at the NCAA Diving Regional in Austin, Texas. Yu finished 17th in the final round of the 3-meter dive with an overall score of 504.75 and took 28th in the women's 1-meter preliminary round. Walters finished 33rd during the preliminary round of the 1-meter dive.
After the conclusion of the championships, the Utah women had six student-athletes named to the All-MWC team. Honors went to Caron, Edge, Otsuka, freshman Sarah Boylen (South Bend, Ind.), Walters and Yu.
