DES MOINES, IOWA - The University of Utah track and field athletes competed at the Drake Relays on Friday. Sophomore Langley Iverson placed second overall in the high jump, while Utah's distance medley group earned seventh overall.
"A dropped baton (distance medley) on the first exchange cost us some time and a place or two. Langley Iverson followed that up with a runner up finish in the high jump. She cleared 5-7 and was second based on misses. The jumping conditions were less than ideal with a wet surface and a breeze in the jumpers' faces. Langley cleared the first two heights on her first attempts and had three solid attempts at what was the winning height (5-8.75), but was unable to get the clearance and keep the contest going," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "Our final event of the day was the 4x400 meter relay preliminaries. We were fourth in our heat and 15th overall. Freshman Ashley Mosley split 54.7 on the second leg to keep us in the mix."
Iverson earned second place in the University High Jump Finals with a 5-7 (1.70m) clearance. Krystle Schade from Alabama won the event with a clearance of 5-8.75. Iverson's personal best of 5-9.25, which she set at the BYU Invite on April 2, currently leads the Mountain West Conference.
Utah's distance medley, comprised of freshman Amanda Mergaert, sophomore Lucy Yates, junior Alyssa Abbott, and senior Chelsey Kaplar, earned seventh overall out of 19 teams with a time of 11:32.85.
In the preliminary round of the 100m hurdles, freshman Angela Kaplar finished sixth in her heat and 15th overall with a time of 14.49.
The 4x400m relay team, freshmen Lauryn McKay and Ashley Mosley and seniors Whitney Wellington and C. Kaplar, ended the day for the Utes with a time of 3:45.23 for 15th place overall.
"Today, because of the growth and progression of our program those results left several of our girls with a sour taste in their mouths," said Kepler. "The good news is that most of them get to run again tomorrow with a little redemption in mind. We'll get a good dinner and some rest and come back tomorrow with a renewed energy level and be ready to compete hard."
