Utes Rally In Ninth, Defeat UNLV 11-10

LAS VEGAS - The Utah baseball team's two-out rally in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Utes to an 11-10 victory over UNLV on Sunday afternoon to win the three-game series, 2-1.
Down 10-9 going into the ninth inning, Gavin Green started the rally with a walk. Nick Kuroczko had an infield single that was just out of the reach of the second baseman. Both runners scored on C.J. Cron's double that was just inside the third-base bag and went down the left field line, giving Utah the 11-10 lead.
Although reliever Stephen Streich put two runners on the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk, the junior got two fly outs and a strikeout to end the game. He earned the win after pitching 3.1 innings, allowing no hits or runs while striking out three. Streich raises his record to 4-2 on the year.
Utah scored seven of its 11 runs off home runs in the game. Kuroczko hit a three-run home run in the third inning while Cron and Rick Cornu each hit two-run shots in the fifth.
UNLV took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, increasing that lead to 5-0 with a run in the second. Kuroczko's home run in the third came after Cooper Blanc walked to lead off the inning and Green singled to left, putting the score at 5-3.
After the Rebels added a run in the bottom of the fourth, Utah pulled ahead with a four-run fifth inning, taking a 7-6 lead. Cron homered after Kuroczko led off the inning with a double to left. Cornu kept it going after Nik Gumeson singled, hitting one over the right field fence.
UNLV pulled back ahead in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring two runs in each inning to regain the lead, 10-7. Nolan Clark and Cash Thomas each had RBI hits in the fifth inning for the Rebels. In the sixth, Drew Beuerlein led off the inning with a home run before Richie Jimenez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to send in another run.
Utah began to creep back in the seventh. Jo Jo Sharrar led off the inning with a walk, advancing around the bases to score on Kyle Myers' single, an error on Michael Beltran's at-bat and a fielder's choice from Blanc. In the eighth inning, Kuroczko led off with a double down the left field line followed by an RBI double from Cron, putting the Utes within a run, 10-9, before the ninth-inning heroics.
Kuroczko was 4-for-6 with three RBI, scoring four runs. Cron went 3-for-6 with five RBI. Green, Gumeson and Myers each had a pair of hits.
Rick Anton pitched five innings as Utah's starter, striking out six. Brock Duke also made an appearance in the sixth inning.
Utah finishes off the regular season with a three-game series against New Mexico, beginning Thursday, May 20, at 6:00 p.m. at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
