LOS ANGELES - USC broke a 5-5 tie with an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Utah baseball team, 6-5, on Saturday afternoon.
Mike O'Neill walked to lead off the ninth inning before moving over on a sacrifice bunt. Cade Kreuter's RBI double sent O'Neill across the plate for the winning run.
USC scored three runs in the first inning with two runs coming off Ricky Oropesa's RBI double. The Utes stranded two runners in the second inning before scoring a run in the third. Cooper Blanc led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on an error on a failed pickoff attempt. Michael Beltran's sacrifice bunt moved Blanc to third before he scored on Nick Kuroczko's sacrifice fly, putting the score at 3-1.
Back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the fourth increased USC's lead to 4-1 before the Utes rallied back to take the lead with a four-run fifth inning. Josh Reed started things off when he reached on an error. Blanc, Kuroczko, Nik Gumeson and Jo Jo Sharrar all had hits in the inning for the Utes as they pulled out to a 5-4 lead.
The Trojans tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on Adam Landecker's RBI single, 5-5.
Utah left two runners on base in the sixth inning and USC stranded a runner in the seventh before the late-inning heroics.
Blanc was 3-for-4 on the day to lead the Utes at the plate. Sharrar had a pair of hits while Kuroczko tallied two RBI.
Starting pitcher Rick Anton allowed five runs on 11 hits over 4.2 innings. Brock Duke was solid in his 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts. Stephen Streich earned the loss after going 1.1 innings. He falls to 3-2 on the season.
Utah and USC continue tomorrow at noon PT. The game had originally been scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT but was changed to accommodate travel plans.
