EUGENE, Ore. - Sophomore Lucy Yates took eighth in the second heat of the 800-meter semifinals with a time of 2:15.43 Wednesday at the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field.
Yates finished 23rd in the overall standings of the event and was unable to move into the final heat.
"Certainly the outcome wasn't what we wanted," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "But Lucy ran a great race through 600 meters to get right in the middle of the pack, which is exactly where she wanted to be. She just didn't have it today. No excuses. It just wasn't there when it was time to sprint.
"This was her first time here and she had to sit around all day, maybe nerves took some energy out of her, but we'll go back and take a look and evaluate everything, like we always do. But we're proud of her. It was her first time being here on a much different stage than a conference or regional meet or anything else."
Yates qualified for the NCAA National Championships May 28 at the NCAA West Quarterfinals in Austin, Texas. She took third place in the first heat and ninth overall, crossing the finish line in 2:07.34.
The St. Albans, Hertfordshire, U.K., native finished as the runner-up in the first round at the NCAA Preliminary on May 27 with a school-record time of 2:06.21 that beat her previous personal best by one second.
"We're really proud of her," Kepler said. "She set the school record and was able to do a lot of great things for us this year. And she's only a sophomore. We're happy to have her back and glad she was able to get this experience."
