SALT LAKE CITY - In her first match as a Ute, freshman Morgan Odale made an impressive debut with a double-double including 12 kills and 11 digs to help the University of Utah volleyball team defeat UC Davis in its season opener, 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 16-25, 25-23) Friday at Crimson Court.
Utah (1-0) held a 10-7 edge in blocks over UC Davis in the first match of the Utah Classic. The Utes grabbed the win despite getting out hit, .247 to .221 for the match.
The Utes displayed a well-rounded offensive attack as three players, Odale, Karolina Bartkowiak and Sarah Collette, registered 12 kills apiece.
Collette registered a .367 hitting percentage with 12 kills on 30 attempts and only one error. Bartkowiak committed four errors on 27 attempts for a .296 hitting percentage and Odale took a team-high 48 swings with errors for a .125 mark.
Sophomore McKenzie Odale coordinated the Ute offense with 29 assists and senior Stephanie Neeley distributed 15.
Defensively, libero Keisha Fisher turned in her 61 st career double-figure dig match with a team-high 12 digs. Junior middle blocker Danielle Killpack posted a match-high six blocks.
Freshmen Erin Redd and Charlee Dyroff were impressive as well. Redd collected five kills on 11 attempts for a .455 hitting percentage to go along with three blocks. Dyroff turned in nine digs and served an ace.
There were 12 ties in a closely-contested first set as Bartkowiak had five kills and four digs while Fisher came up with a team-high five digs. With the score tied at 17, the Utes took the next four points and went on to a 25-22 first-set victory. The Utes outhit the Aggies, .234 to .208, in the opening set.
The second set followed in similar fashion with 16 ties and six lead changes. The final tie came at 22 points apiece before the Utes closed the set on a 3-1 run to cease a 25-23 second-set win and a 2-0 advantage in the match. Utah held a .226 to .212 advantage in hitting for the set. Morgan Odale had four kills and a pair of digs in the set while Fisher had four more digs.
Utah was within one point early in the third set, at 10-9, before UC Davis scored six consecutive points to take a 16-9 lead. The Aggies' lead would grow to as many as nine points as they took a 25-16 win in the third set to make the match 2-1. The Utes were outhit .351-.114 during the set, but Morgan and McKenzie Odale both chipped in three digs and Morgan Odale turned in three kills.
In the fourth set, Utah jumped out to an 11-6 lead and eventually extended their lead to as many as six points at 20-14 before UC Davis strung together six straight points to tie the set at 20 points apiece. The set remained tied at 23 points apiece before an Aggie attack error and a Killpack kill gave the Utes the match-clinching win, 25-23.
UC Davis (0-1) had three players of its own in double-figures for kills, led by 16 from Katie Denny, 15 from Betsy Sedlak and 11 by Allison Whitson.
The Utes improved 18-18 in season-openers and are now 13-8 in openers under Launiere.
The Utah Classic continues tomorrow as UC Davis takes on Utah State at 1 p.m. The Utes and Utah State square off at 7 p.m.
