CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Utah women's tennis team completed its first day of competition at the University of Virginia's Fall Invitational Friday. Senior Evgenia Kryuchkova highlighted the day with an upset win over 41st-ranked Michaela Kissell of Marshall, 6-3, 7-5, in the opening round of flight-A.

"Evgenia had a great win," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "I can't say I am completely happy with the overall results, but it is good to be underway and we will get better from this."

Kryuchkova takes on UVa's 45th-ranked Lindsey Hardenbergh in the consolation bracket after she fell to Virginia's Emily Fraser in the second round.

Junior Anastasia Putilina, ranked 67th, defeated Virginia Commonwealth's Ana Bara, 6-4, 6-0, in the first consolation round after suffering an upset by UVa's Erin Vierra in round one of flight-A. She faces Dominika Zaprazna of Marshall in the second round of consolation play.

In flight-B, freshman Sarah Pham defeated Marshall's Kristina Koprica, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 in the consolation bracket after she fell in the opening round to Olga Terteac of VCU, retiring in the second set after dropping the first, 6-4. The Ute takes on Anik Cepeda of W&M in the second round of consolation play.

In flight-C, redshirt sophomore Lexi Provancha topped Ryan Riechel of Dartmouth 6-3, 6-1 in the consolation bracket after falling to North Carolina State's Christy Sipes in round one. She faces Alex Whitehead of UNC-Greensboro in the second round of consolation play.

In flight-A doubles Kryuchkova and Pham fell to 20th-ranked Kissell and Zaprazna of Marshall in the first round. Putilina and Tanner fell to NC St.'s Sandhya Nagaraj and Sanaa Bhambri. The duo of Harris and Provancha received a bye for round one of flight-B.

All three Ute doubles teams resume play at 9 am ET Saturday.
