COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference announced Tuesday that junior Hannah Caron earned the conference's Swimmer of the Week honor for the first time in her collegiate career.
"Hannah had a great training trip and is swimming better than I have ever seen from her before so that's really exciting," said head coach Greg Winslow. "To be able to have those kinds of times while she was tired, coming off of that kind of training, was great."
Hailing from Raleigh, N.C., Caron finished in the top three in her events against Pac-10 opponents Arizona State and Oregon State on Saturday. She won the 100 fly (55.26), earned second in the 200 fly (2:02.33), and finished third in the 200 IM (2:07.91). Caron also swam the third leg of the Ute's runner-up 200 medley relay (1.43.98).
"It was a great opportunity to race against Pac-10 teams," said Caron. "I had a lot of fun with the competition because it helped me really focus on racing. I feel like I did a good job racing against them."
Last summer, Caron qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials in the 100 fly for posting a time of 1:01.79 in her hometown for the North Carolina Senior Championships. Caron has been named to the all-MWC teams for the 100 fly, 200 fly, and 200 IM for the past two consecutive seasons. The school-record holder in the 100 fly (54.01) and the 200 IM (1:59.18), Caron also is in the all-time top ten school records for her times in the 200 fly (2:00.06), the 100 free (51.23), and the 200 free (1:51.54).
Caron has expressed that she is "really excited for the future and facing more Pac-10 teams" next year.
"Her confidence is really high so hopefully she's ready to repeat as conference champ at the end of the season," Winslow said. "She's a versatile swimmer and can swim everything so we're going to use her in many different ways this spring."
The Utes will travel to Fort Worth, Texas next to take on the TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 12 p.m. CT.
