SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah swimming and diving team dressed up in pink swim caps to help bring awareness to breast cancer for their Power of Pink meet against Wyoming on Friday. The Ute women defeated the Cowgirls by a score of 160 to 140. The Ute men fell to the Cowboys by a score of 179 to 121 even though they posted season-best times across the board.
"This is the first time the women have beaten Wyoming since I have been here," said head coach Greg Winslow. "It's fun to watch the kids put their hearts into it and you can see that they really want to race. This is a start of what should be a great few weeks leading up to conference."
Traycie Swartz, Samantha Zuch, Hannah Caron, and Natalie Edge kicked off the night with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:42.78), posting a time only a few tenths of a second behind the all-time school record. Edge, Zuch, Kristina Evans, and Swartz also closed the night on a win in the 400 free relay (3:24.63).
Swartz placed second and topped the all-time school record in the 100 back by nearly a full second when she posted a time of 55.68. This was an event Winslow had been waiting for since the season began.
"I hadn't gone that fast in a long time, so I surprised myself," Swartz exclaimed. "It was definitely a confidence booster."
Zuch also saw a lot of success in the lanes, winning the 200 free (1:52.54) and the 500 free (5:02.15).
"I felt like those were my best 200 and 500 free races of the year so far," Zuch said. "It was a fun atmosphere tonight where we definitely put our hearts into it."
Edge won the 50 free (23.39) and the 100 free (50.64) while Evans came in behind her in the 100 free (51.11). Caron finished first in the 100 fly (54.74) and the 200 fly (2:04.30), as well as the 200 IM (2:03.74). Sarah Boylen and Maiya Otsuka touched in behind Caron in the 100 fly and the 200 IM with respective times of 57.68 and 2:07.39.
Ellis Walters and Kwan Ling Yu topped the 1-meter dive with scores of 267.83 and 258.38, respectively. In the 3-meter dive, Yu placed second (292.20) while Walters placed third (282.68).
"The men were beat by a really good Wyoming team," Winslow said, "We had some good races though, including some season-best times. The 400 free relay at the end showed that our men aren't giving up even when they are being beaten."
Brent Murray, Bjorn Gunnarsson, Karson Applin, and Garret Beaman all rallied for the win in the 400 free relay (3:06.14).
Applin finished first in the 100 fly (51.13). He also finished third and posted a season best in the 100 breast (57.72), only seven-tenths of a second behind winner Nate Ladner.
"Even though we lost tonight, the men had a lot of energy throughout the meet," Applin said. "This was definitely one of the most exciting meets I have been in since I've been here."
Eric Bonicelli and Gunnarsson also touched in winning times in the 1000 free and the 100 free with respective times of 9:45.55 and 46.68. Gunnarsson's time in the 100 free was another season-best.
Murray posted second-place times in the 200 free (1:43.37) and the 50 free (20.99) where he was barely out touched by Jeff Fray.
"Derek Lair, one of our freshmen, had a great meet tonight and had season-best times in all three of his events," Winslow said.
Lair placed fifth in the 100 fly (52.98), sixth in the 200 IM (2:01.00), and posted a time of 21.84 in a 50 free exhibition race.
Other strong performances for the Ute men include the second-place finishes of Major Robinson in the 100 back (51.81), Garrett Peterson in the 200 breast (2:06.91), and Luke Donohue in the 100 fly (52.98).
On the boards, Caleb Herrick was the highest-placing Ute in the 1-meter dive with a score of 265.95, earning fourth place. In the 3-meter dive, Nelson Foo placed second with a score of 355.20 while Brandon Stoppelmoor posted a fourth-place score of 265.57.
The Utah swimming and diving team is back in action tomorrow morning against Air Force at 11 a.m. at Ute Natatorium.
"The reason we scheduled meets like this is because this is what it's like at conference," Winslow explained. "You can go swim your heart out but then you have to be able to shut down, recharge, and be ready to go the next day. We'll be ready."
