COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference announced Natalie Edge as its Women's Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday. This is her second time earning this honor, the first came in November.
"Natalie is having a great senior season. This is what you always hope for with your athletes, that they get better every year," said head coach Greg Winslow. "The best part of it is that she is enjoying what she's doing and enjoying her last couple of months here."
Edge, a native of South Jordan, Utah, helped the Ute women earn victories over both Wyoming and Air Force last weekend.
"Against Wyoming, I did the best I've ever done in a dual meet so it's exciting to see what I'll be able to do at conference," Edge said.
Against Wyoming, Edge anchored the winning 400 free relay that posted an NCAA "B" cut time of 3:24.63, with Samantha Zuch, Kristina Evans, and Traycie Swartz swimming the first three legs. Edge also swam the first leg of the 200 medley relay with Swartz, Zuch, and Hannah Caron with a winning time of 1:42.78. Other wins against the Cowgirls for Edge include won the 50 free (23.39) and the 100 free (50.64).
"With Air Force, I got to swim events I don't usually swim but it was fun to do," said the senior.
Against Air Force, Edge alongside Alyssa Woodliff, Zuch, and Sarah Boylen earned first place in the 200 medley relay (1:47.23). Edge also won the 200 free (1:53.75) and the 200 breast (2:28.21).
Winslow was impressed with her performance in the back-to-back meets over the weekend and said, "there wasn't one race of hers that I wasn't happy with."
As a 2010 all-MWC swimmer in the 50, 100, and 200 free, Edge will be defending her MWC title in the 100 free this year at the conference meet. She holds the school records in the 200, 400, and 800 free relays, and also holds school top-10 times in the 50 free (22.92), the 100 free (49.76), and the 200 free (1:49.13).
"I will say this, if somebody is going to beat her, they are probably going to break the conference record to do it," Winslow said of the upcoming conference 100 free race. "I believe Natalie will break the record."
When asked what has made her senior year such a success, Edge said, "I'm more mentally engaged in my races and more emotionally invested. I really want to help the team do something special this year."
Next up for the Utes is a conference dual meet against UNLV in Las Vegas on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. PT.
