LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah swimming and diving team competed against UNLV on Saturday at Buchanan Natatorium. The Ute women beat the Rebels by a score of 159 to 141 while the men lost by a score of 179.5 to 111.5.
"The energy was really good and the kids are swimming really well right now," said head coach Greg Winslow. "Overall, I'm pretty impressed with how the women did today."
Winslow claimed that Samantha Zuch and Hannah Caron "stole the show" in the meet against UNLV. Zuch won the 200 free (1:51.90), the 100 breast (1:05.92), and the 500 free (5:00.64). Caron swam the second leg in the winning 400 free relay (3:24.29) and won the 100 fly (54.48) and the 200 fly (2:01.77), posting season-best times in both events. Zuch and Caron also swam in the winning 200 medley relay together (1:42.96).
The other Ute women in the 400 free relay included Natalie Edge, Kristina Evans, and Traycie Swartz. Swartz and Edge also swam in the 200 medley relay with Zuch and Caron.
The winning 100 back time by Swartz is the second-fastest time in school history (55.93), only three-tenths of a second behind the school-record time she posted last week. Swartz also won the 100 free (51.20) with Edge right on her tail (51.30).
Another win for the Ute women was the 200 breast by Maiya Otsuka (2:19.27), who also finished second in the 200 IM (2:05.98) less than a tenth of a second behind Brittany Ozar.
On the diving boards, Ellis Walters swept the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 287.03 and 286.20, respectively. Kwan Ling Yu earned the runner-up spot in the 3-meter dive (265.28).
"We got beat on the men's side and we kind of expected that, but we had some good swims," Winslow said.
Highlight swims for the Ute men include first-place finishes by Karson Applin in the 200 IM (1:54.89), Eric Bonicelli in the 200 fly (1:53.04), and Major Robinson in the 200 back (1:52.26).
There were also strong runner-up performances, including Garret Beaman in the 200 IM (1:55.94), Luke Donohue in the 200 fly (1:54.59), Garrett Peterson in the 100 breast (55.73), and Robinson in the 100 back (51:80). Applin also posted a time of 50.13 in the 100 fly where he placed third.
Michael Glasson placed first in the 3-meter dive (266.40) while Nelson Foo won the 1-meter dive (351.30).
Next, the Utah swimming and diving team will face off against in-state and conference rival BYU at Ute Natatorium. The meet will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4.
"We're looking forward to a great meet next weekend," Winslow stated. "We hope everyone will come out and join us."
