UPCOMING
The University of Utah swimming and diving team has spent the last couple of weeks training and performing in exhibition meets against Illinois, Illinois State, and Arizona State in Arizona to prepare for its last stretch of the season. The Ute women will compete against Arizona State and Oregon State on Saturday in Tempe, Ariz., at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
LAST MONTH
Prior to the end of the fall semester, the Ute women overcame Arkansas to bring home a 158 - 84 win.
Traycie Swartz, Samantha Zuch, Hannah Caron, and Natalie Edge won the 400 medley relay race (3:51.50), while Swartz, Zuch, Edge, and Kristina Evans won the 400 free relay (3:31.74). Other victories for the Ute women included the 50 free by Edge (24.12) and the 200 IM by Caron (2:08.05).
Ellis Walters was the highest-placing Ute woman on the diving boards, earning second place and posting an NCAA zone qualifying score in the 1-meter dive (273.45). She also finished third in the 3-meter dive (257.55). On Dec. 8, Walters was named MWC Female Diver of the Week for her performance against Arkansas.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Greg Winslow
"We've been in Arizona since December 26 for training. If we are traveling, we have to have a meet so we have been doing exhibition meets against Illinois, Illinois State, and Arizona State.
"Only our women are swimming against Arizona State and Oregon State. Arizona is one of the best teams in the country. We've seen them both before at the Arena Invitational so I have a good idea of what we are up against. We're looking forward to this challenge this weekend.
"We are looking forward to building a rivalry with both of them and measuring ourselves against them within the Pac-12 starting next year and for years to come."
LAST MEETING
Both the Arizona State and Oregon State women's teams competed at the Arena Invitational in Long Beach, Calif., against Utah Nov. 18 - 20. Arizona placed third overall and Oregon State placed seventh while the Utes earned 13th place against the other 17 schools competing.
In the 2009-10 season, Arizona State defeated the Ute women by a score of 194 - 102. However, this will be the first meet between the Utes and Oregon State.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
The 26th-ranked Arizona women's swimming squad boasts seven NCAA-qualifying athletes including Rebecca Ejdervik (200 breast), Jordyn Green (200 breast), Tristin Baxter (1650 free), as well as Shannon Landgrebe, Cassie Morrice, Caroline Kuczynski, and Katie Haron (400 free relay).
Ejdervik broke both school records and meet records at the Arena Invitational in the 100 breast, and earned a school top-10 time in the 200 breast. She along with Kuczynski, Haron, and Kelli Kyle set an Arena meet record in the 200 medley. Baxter also set school records in the 1000 and 1650 free in Long Beach. Kyle (100 back), Landgrebe (200 free), Green (100 and 200 breast) and Cassie Morrice (200 free) are all school-record holders as well.
Oregon State's women swimming team is said to be ranked as high as seventh in the nation according to the Avidasports Performance Rankings after their impressive performance at the Arena Invitational that featured high finishes, low times, and improvement throughout.
Jenni Dole broke a school record in the 100 back as well as in the 200 free relay alongside Ashley Kerekanich, Ocean Trail, and Keri Holmstrom. Dole has posted NCAA-qualifying times in the 100 fly, 100 and 200 back, 200 free relay, and 400 medley relay. Rachel O'Brien is another NCAA-qualifying swimmer in the 200 fly.
