The University of Utah volleyball team comes back to Crimson Court this weekend to face Pac-12 Conference foes Arizona State and Arizona. The Utes play the Sun Devils Friday at 7 p.m. MT, then take on the Wildcats Saturday at 7 p.m. MT.
Utah stands 7-11 overall and 2-7 in Pac-12 play this season after splitting road matches at Washington State and No. 3 Washington last weekend.
Comeback Kids: Utah recovered from a first-set loss to defeat Washington State, 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-16), Friday at Bohler Gym in Pullman, Wash., for its second Pac-12 victory. The Utes turned in a solid defensive performance at Washington State as it outblocked the Cougars, 14.0 to 4.0, and limited WSU to a .114 hitting percentage.
Redd Roundup: Utah is eighth in the NCAA with a 2.98 block-per-set average as a team and has been led by Erin Redd, who is 19th in the NCAA and fourth in the Pac-12's overall statistics, averaging 1.38 blocks per set this season. Redd is seventh in the conference-only stats with 1.14 blocks per set through nine league matches. She also has 2.72 kills per set on a .313 hitting percentage through 18 matches. Redd needed only 17 swings to secure her 10 kills. She committed only two errors and had a .471 efficiency on the attack during the match. Redd turned in her seventh double-figure-kill match of the season and the 20th of her career.
Dealing with Dalton: Freshman outside hitter Shelby Dalton (Moab, Utah) led the Utes with 2.57 kills per set during their road trip through the Evergreen State last weekend in seven sets of action at Washington State and No. 3 Washington. Dalton was second on the squad with a .271 hitting percentage and ranked fourth with 0.57 blocks per set.
In her first career start, Dalton was a huge part of Utah's second Pac-12 Conference victory that came in a four-set decision against Washington State in Pullman on Friday. She set a new career-high with 10 kills and only committed a pair of errors on the attack against the Cougars as well and also drew a key defensive matchup on Washington State outside hitter Meagan Ganzer, coming away with four blocks. Dalton's previous career high in kills was six against Boston College on Sept. 3.
Packing a Kill on the Block: Senior middle blocker Danielle Killpack (Idaho Falls, Idaho) is sixth in the Pac-12's conference-only statistics with 1.21 blocks per set through nine league matches. Killpack ranks 43rd in the NCAA and eighth in the conference's overall statistics with 1.24 blocks per set.
During Friday's win at Washington State, Killpack tied her season high with eight blocks to lead the front row of the Ute defense. Offensively, she contributed six kills on 19 attempts and only two errors for a .211 hitting percentage. Killpack added a pair of blocks Saturday at No. 3 Washington.
Slump Buster: Utah's 25-15 second-set victory over Washington State on Friday broke its 19-set losing streak that began Sept. 16 at Stanford and ran through the first set against the Cougars. The victory snapped the Utes' six-match slide.
