LOS ANGELES - Senior middle blocker Danielle Killpack came up with a match-high eight blocks but the University of Utah volleyball fell to No. 3 USC, 3-0 (15-25, 21-25, 14-25), Friday at the Galen Center.
Utah (8-13, 3-9 Pac-12) outblocked the third-ranked Women of Troy 8.5 to 4.0 in the match and has held the advantage in team blocks over its opponents in 16 of their 21 contests this season. Unfortunately, USC hit .357 in the match and Utah was limited to a .182 mark in the match.
Killpack had seven blocks against USC with six block assists and a block solo. She added five kills on eight swings with only one error for a .500 hitting percentage.
In the back row of the Ute defense, sophomore libero Nikki Sim posted a team-high nine digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Odale posted a team-high eight kills to go with three digs and two blocks. Offensively, Chelsey Schofield and Erin Redd added six kills apiece.
Junior setters McKenzie Odale and Abby Simmons split the setting duties as both contributed 14 assists apiece. Odale added five digs and Simmons added three.
The Women of Troy took the first eight points of the opening set and USC led by as many as 10 (three different times 15-5) before a 3-0 Utah run cut its deficit to seven (15-8). Unfortunately, USC was able to work its lead back to 10 (19-9) and go on to a 25-15 first-set win. The Utes outblocked the Women of Troy 3.5 to 2.0 in the frame with Morgan Odale and Killpack collecting two kills apiece, but Utah was outhit .303 to .037 in the opener and was at a 12-7 deficit in digs.
USC sprinted to a 4-0 lead to start the second frame and built a lead as large as six (7-1). Down 8-2, Utah countered with a 3-1 run to cut USC's lead to three points at 8-5. USC quickly brought its lead back to six (11-5) and would lead by as many as 11 (23-12). Utah put together a 9-1 run to pull within three (24-21) but could not avoid a 25-21 defeat in the second set. Utah outblocked USC in the frame, 4.0 to 1.0, as Killpack had four blocks in the frame alone. Morgan Odale contributed five kills in the second as Utah hit .344, but allowed USC to go for a .371 on the attack.
In the third set, Utah trailed early by a 4-1 margin. USC managed to extend its lead to nine (21-12) en route to a 25-14 win to clinch the match.
No. 3 USC (16-3, 11-1 Pac-12) was led by 10 kills by Lauren Williams and Kendall Bateman distributed 43 assists.
